The final days of summer are upon us. We are heading to the Great Minnesota Get Together next week. A feast of food and people watching. Always a good time. It’s a family tradition that we head out early in the morning and do nothing but eat greasy junk food all day. It’s funny because even though we go every year, we are always excited to go. It never gets old. Ahhh…the Fair. There is nothing better. I can’t wait. Kel is excited to try the spaghetti and meatball on a stick. I can’t even imagine what it looks like…

Then there is bowling…the season starts in two short weeks. Damn, I thought I managed to squeak out of being secretary this year, but our newly elected secretary flaked out and I’m back in. I guess it is better this way since I will be bowling and all. There will be less bitching and that’s always a good thing. I really want this to be my final year, but we’ll see. I always manage to get sucked back in either out of guilt or because for a minute I actually like bowling. The saddest part of the whole deal is that because our league is slowly shrinking, we have to extend out season one more week. Why me???

I received a job offer today and I actually turned it down. The pay was less then what I was making when I quit factory work 5 years ago. I feel like a greedy pig because it wasn’t enough money, but I would have been paying over a quarter of my salary just for daycare and the commute. Hopefully I don’t suffer any bad karma for turning it down…

It’s our last week of summer vacation. Jaycie goes to the orthodontist this week. She has to get a pallet expander and four braces on to help with her crossbite. She is super excited which is so funny because most kids would freak out over having to get braces.

We are taking a family road trip to Madison and Milwaukee on Labor Day weekend. We are going to check out the zoos and the Capitol. It should be good time and a good test drive for our trip to Florida

More against Wal-mart. I wonder if anything will get them to change their business practices.

From the Star Tribune:

Teachers unions call for Wal-Mart boycott

Two of the state’s largest teachers unions are urging their members not to buy back-to-school supplies at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., accusing the nation’s largest retailer of unfair labor practices.

Both the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and the St. Paul Federation of Teachers, which together represent about 9,500 teachers and other school employees in the Twin Cities, say the retailer pays substandard wages and has a high percentage of workers without health care insurance.

The local unions are following the lead of the 2.7 million-member National Education Association, the nation’s largest teachers union, and the 1.3 million-member American Federation of Teachers, which last week held rallies in 30 cities demanding that Wal-Mart boost its wages and expand health benefits.

Summer is quickly passing us by. I can’t believe school starts in about 2 weeks. Ben and the kids are anxious to go back and I’m sad because I have to wait until January. I’m so jealous of everyone getting their books and supplies. Ben hasn’t had a break so I’ve watched him do homework all summer. Now Tiff is starting with her homework. And I have nothing to do. I started reading Anna Karenina which is keeping me busy, but I’m aching for textbooks. I love school too much.

I’m officially licensed now which means I can legitimately start working. I’ve applied for a few jobs and I have one interview on Friday. I’m not sure exactly what I want to do in my field so it’s hard to apply for something. All the available jobs are in mental health which I’m really not keen on. I’ll just keep looking and see what happens. I’m sure I will start looking more seriously once schools out. The idea of actually working in an office frightens me. I know I can do it, but it will be weird to have a boss and everything. The paychecks won’t be bad though…

Ben and I were talking last night about how the heat is starting to get to people. Look at these headlines:

Store clerk shot in head

Chaos follows failed robbery

Authorities search for man who may have abducted woman, children

Shot fired by deputy serving a warrant
