So here’s the dilemma. I love my job, but the company I work for is gross. I’ve been struggling with the whole for-profit, anti-unionism of the company since day two, but the more I get into it, the worse it becomes. It seems the company views clients as numbers and dollar signs rather than people. I’m sure this is true of almost all corporations, but I think that when you are in the business of helping people–the actual “helping people” part should factor into business practices, but for some reason it appears that this doesn’t register with this corporation. It’s almost to the point where it looks bad when we are successful because then that client doesn’t need us anymore. It’s just disgusting. I feel that I am supposed to be advocating for the corporation rather then for my clients. The whole thing makes me feel gross.

Happy 5th Anniversary Tracy and Tony!!!

Let the fundraising begin! Jaycie and Max brought home their annual fundraising stuff yesterday. Jaycie was so excited about selling it that she started making phone calls right away. She called Tracy and was quite the sales person. Max isn’t so much excited about the selling part as he is about the prizes. He was wide awake at 6:30am thinking about the 20 tubs of cookie dough he needs to sell to get a prize out of the treasure chest. They are so funny.

It’s Jaycie’s birthday tomorrow. I was teasing her about it being her last day being 7 and she goes, “God will come overnight and take out the 7 and replace it with an 8.” Where do kids come up with this stuff? What a little cutie!

And the pre-conference confessions begin. This morning Max spilled his guts about all the naughty things he has been doing at school. First, he said that he is bugging the kid next to him by humming. The kid tells on him so the teacher has to tell him to stop. Then, he got bored and mad while they were making leaf books so he scribbled angrily all over his. The teacher wrote on the book that she was very disappointed in him. Prompting Max to run home and throw the book in the garbage without letting us see it. He normally worries and tells us more than the teacher ever does, so conferences should be interesting.

eyes wide open.jpg
I went to the Eyes Wide Open Exhibit today at St. Kate’s. It was so powerful. I don’t know what I was expecting. I didn’t realize it was going to be so personal. There were pictures and letters and other memorial items attached to some of the boots. It was just so amazing. They also have a labyrinth made of shoes with the names of the Iraqi civilians who were killed in war. Amazing. The exhibit ended today, but the labyrinth will be there for awhile so if you are in the area and have the time, stop by St. Kate’s and check it out. I also ran into one of my past social work professors while I was there. I has to maintain my composure as I introduced her to Ben and the kids. She was one of the people who volunteer to read the names of the soldiers and civilians killed in the war.
